D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray on Wednesday again denied that his 2010 campaign engaged in illegal activity, even as the fall-out from a raid at locations with ties to a major political donor continued to rock the Wilson Building.

"I would never condone anybody breaking the rules," Gray said. "The rules should have been followed, period."

Gray's campaign is the subject on an ongoing federal probe after Sulaimon Brown, who ran against Gray in the Democratic primary, leveled charges that the mayor's campaign offered him a government job in exchange for Brown urging residents to support him or Gray against then-Mayor Adrian Fenty.

"We all know that there's an ongoing investigation," Gray said. "I want that investigation to play out."

On Friday, federal agents searched the home and office of Jeffrey Thompson, a prolific donor to political campaigns in the District.

Thompson's accounting firm has acknowledged that the raids were in connection to the campaign finance probe.
