Impact player

Pushed right into the NHL after winning a national title at Boston College, forward Chris Kreider continues to be a revelation for Rangers. He overpowered goalie Braden Holtby seven minutes into third period for a 2-1 lead and assisted on Brad Richards' goal 90 seconds later.

Under the radar

New York captain Ryan Callahan missed out on last year's postseason meeting with the Caps thanks to a broken foot, but he made up for lost time on Saturday with eight hits and three blocked shots.

Did you notice ...

The hustle by Rangers forward Ruslan Fedotenko in second period? He drove hard through neutral zone with speed and dumped the puck into the offensive zone. That set up teammate Artem Anisimov's wrap-around goal.

Behind the bench

Dale Hunter switched his lines with Jason Chimera playing alongside Alex Ovechkin and Brooks Laich on the top line. Troy Brouwer reunited the "Wolfpack" line with Jay Beagle and Matt Hendricks.

John Tortorella's club is not at full strength with key forwards Brian Boyle (concussion) and Brandon Dubinsky (lower-body injury) both out. So he used defenseman Steve Eminger as a fourth-line forward instead.
