Mainstream Media Scream: WaPo vs. NYT

Our weekly look at the loudest screech from the mainstream media features the Washington Post propping up economic data for President Obama while the New York Times slapped it down. On Saturday, the Post spun anemic 2.2 percent GDP growth in the first quarter under the headline “Economy Continues On Path Of Growth,” with a story talking about how Americans are spending and “energizing the recovery.”

The New York Times took a different approach with the headline, “Economic Growth Slows Unexpectedly to 2.2%.”

Media Research Center Vice President of Research Brent Baker explains our pick: “It should be a pretty embarrassing day at the Post when they come off as more in the tank for Obama’s reelection efforts than even the New York Times where the public editor Arthur Brisbane last week conceded the paper ‘basked a bit in the warm glow of Mr. Obama’s election.’”

Rating: two out of five screams.
