The Redskins tried to trade Jabar Gaffney, knowing he wasn't in their plans. But there were no takers so now they made the logical move: they released him.
Gaffney led the Redskins with 68 catches for 947 yards in 2011, but the number the coaches focused on was 2.7. That was his yards after the catch -- and it's a stat the coaches desperately want to improve from its wide receiver group this season.
Gaffney became expendable when the Redskins signed free agent receviers Pierre Garcon and Josh Morgan. They're also high on Leonard Hankerson and still have Santana Moss and Anthony Armstrong among others. There wouldn't have been much playing time for Gaffney.
Last week Gaffney wondered if a recent tirade from his Twitter feed contributed to the Redskins' decision, but coach Mike Shanahan shot that down.
