Mainstream media scream: Matthews on gay marriage ‘wolves’

Our weekly look at the loudest screech from the mainstream media features MSNBC’s Chris Matthews rapping critics of President Obama’s flip-flop to back gay marriage.

Matthews said, “That’s the good news for everybody in the country in terms of freedom and the long march towards liberalism in this country. ...But there's always been this other army out there that feeds on those who resent it. That army's been out there during Jim Crow. It was out there during abolition, during suffrage. There’s always an army that feeds on change and feeds against it — the wolves, and they’re being released right now and they’re probably giggling with delight at how they’re going to use this.”

Media Research Center Vice President of Research Brent Baker explains our pick: “Matthews typifies the liberal media's inability to deal rationally with this issue. Instead of considering the concerns of the majorities which consistently favor keeping marriage as it has always been defined, he stoops to impugning their motives in the most vile way by saying they are no better than those who wanted to keep slavery.”

Rating: Three out of five screams.
