Government forecasters upgraded the Washington area’s risk for severe weather on Friday to “moderate,” a designation seen more frequently in the storm-prone South and Midwest.

Although weather patterns in the D.C. region are usually tame, the National Weather Service issued tornado watches and warnings for Friday afternoon and warned that severe thunderstorms were likely to continue into the evening.

The storms could prompt flash flooding and include damaging winds, large hail as well as isolated tornadoes.
