The $1 per trip fuel surcharge that District taxis have levied for more than a year will end Wednesday, the DC Taxicab Commission said.

Regulators imposed the fee in March 2011, but with AAA forecasting that area gas prices will continue to fall and hit $3.50 a gallon this summer, the city said it would spare riders the surcharge. Officials said, though, they will track gas prices and may make changes should conditions warrant.

"The commission will continue to monitor the cost of gasoline ... and should conditions change, it will consider appropriate action," Taxicab Commission Chairman Ron Linton said.
