Even without junior running back Tavon Austin, who injured his leg in the first quarter, the Dunbar Poets didn?t miss a beat, outscoring South Carroll 34-8 Saturday in the 1A State Semifinal game.
Junior quarterback Jonathon Perry proved the Poets are more than just a running team by throwing for 278 yards and three touchdowns through the air.

Junior wide receiver Sean Farr caught 7 passes for 221 yards (172 in the first half) and two touchdowns, moving his season total to 15. Farr had only one reception shorter than 18 yards, and caught passes of 51, 54, and 37 for the Poets.
“I just wanted to get to the state finals,” Farr said. “People are going to step up next week. We?re just going to have fun and play our game.”
Despite gaining only four first downs in the first half, the Cavaliers kept it close, trailing 14-0 at halftime. However, they could not contain the Poets for long. In the third quarter, Dunbar scored three touchdowns in a span of 1:58 to put the game away.
Juniors Tevin Brown andGary Onuekwusi each had an interception for the Poets. Onuekwusi returned his interception 40 yards for a touchdown to move the score to 34-0.
Junior running back Patrick Borlick scored the only touchdown of the game on a six-yard run for the Cavaliers, who had trouble moving the ball against the Poets.
The victory moved the Poets? winning streak to 23 games, and set them up for next Saturday?s State Championship game against Allegany at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore.
“It means a lot to get to the state finals,” Poets coach Lawrence Smith said. “We are going to be pumped up playing at M&T, but we are going to come ready to play.”
