Sunday was President Joe Biden’s 80th birthday, and we honored the occasion with an editorial asking Biden not to run for reelection:
“At his advanced age, Biden has become a danger to himself and others. He is clearly past the peak of his executive function and is often not all there. A decision at this point to run again for president can only be an act of selfishness. It would be a total failure to put country above personal ambition.
“We are not the biggest fans of the policies the Democratic Party pursues, but we refuse to believe that Biden is the best person it can nominate in 2024. It is time for Biden to step aside and for somebody, anybody else, to lead the Democratic Party.”
The Democratic Party is not the only of our two parties with a gerontocracy problem. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell is also 80 years old, and then there is the upcoming presidential primary.
Former President Donald Trump is just four years younger than Biden and, if elected, would be as old as on Inauguration Day as President Ronald Reagan was on his last day in office.

Trump has had nowhere near the same number of physical and mental lapses as Biden (the editorial documents the worst eight of them), but by watching his presidential announcement last Tuesday, it is clear he has lost a step. His speech was lifeless, uninspiring, and even the faithful gathered tried to leave before he was done talking.
Just as the Democrats can do better than Biden, Republicans can do better than Trump.
