PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A 12-year-old Cranston girl has won a challenge by first lady Michelle Obama to come up with a healthy and delicious lunchtime recipe.
The White House said Thursday that Samantha Mastrati's recipe for Italian garden salsa with crunchy chicken tenders was chosen as the top recipe submitted from Rhode Island.
Samantha is among 54 winners ages 8 through 12 selected from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and three territories.
The recipes they created had to feature each of the food groups, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins and low-fat dairy foods, and fruits and vegetables had to make up roughly half the plate.
The winners are invited to have lunch at the White House with the first lady on July 9.
