Marion Barry says he’s paying off his delinquent taxes

.

Not to be outdone by Councilman Harry Thomas Jr. settling his student loan debt, Ward 8 Councilman Marion Barry has sent out a news release telling folks he’s still on track for paying off his taxes. You know, the taxes that he was found guilty of evading in 2006?

Barry’s statement was in response to media reports that the IRS had filed another lien on his home. The lien was for more than $3,200 in unpaid income taxes from 2010.

Barry says the new lien is part of the process that started in 2006 when he made his payment plan to pay off his taxes. Barry had not paid taxes since 1999 at that point. However, he was taken to court after 2006 a few more times for failing to pay subsequent years’ taxes.

Here’s his statement:

In 2006 I pled guilty to a misdemeanor for failing to file several years of taxes. With penalties and interest, this debt is many thousands of dollars. Since I did not have the ability to pay the entire amount I owed to IRS at once, I entered into an orderly process to establish a payment plan which is permitted by law. The repayment plan is on schedule and working. The only thing new is this latest lien and it too, shall be taken care of.

Barry added that a “continuing problem” in resolving this matter is poor communication between his representatives and the different IRS divisions.

“The various IRS divisions do not seem to know what the other divisions have agreed to and accepted regarding the resolution of this matter,” he stated. “It does no good for the media to sensationalize this situation and beat me up as I have been using the processes established by the IRS to resolve this matter.”

Thomas, interestingly enough, said earlier this year through an attorney that paperwork mixups were the cause of his delinquency in paying off his student loans.
