Ben Carson: ‘People are so stupid’ to doubt my ability to lead HUD

.

Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson criticized those who have questioned whether he was fit to run the federal department.

“You know, people are so stupid,” Carson said during a Wednesday morning event hosted by The Hill.

Carson’s discussion focused on recovery efforts from recent hurricanes and wildfires across the country. He joked it will take “somewhere between 1 and 100 years” to rebuild Puerto Rico following devastation it suffered from Hurricane Maria in September.

Carson was a Republican presidential candidate in the 2016 election and later endorsed President Trump after dropping out of the GOP race. He worked as a neurosurgeon before being appointed to HUD.

He said his days of running for higher office are over.

“I have no desire whatsoever” to run again for president, he said.

He defended his new boss from media and public criticism over his Twitter rhetoric and other behavioral issues.

“If [Trump] said ‘This is a dark day,’ media would call him racist,” Carson said.

A new poll released Wednesday found the majority of U.S. voters believes Trump is racist.
