Obama’s ‘Postmodern’ Campaign

.

Obama has managed to anger gay journalists and groups by refusing to talk with them. A leader of Obama’s National LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered) Leadership Council explains this is all part of the campaign’s “postmodern approach” to protecting gay rights. In particular, he says, while Hillary Clinton is “making her appeal almost exclusively to gay audiences,” Obama is discussing gay rights with “mainstream audiences.” Did the head of the Obama’s gay Leadership Council just proclaim homosexuality out of the “mainstream”? How is Obama’s association with Rev. Meeks, a man who managed to combine anti-Semitism and homophobia in blaming “Hollywood Jews for bringing us Brokeback Mountain,” part of this “postmodern approach”? And what’s up with a political operative referring to a campaign’s strategy as “postmodern”? Among right-wing communications operatives, there is a rule: use the word postmodern on the record and lose your job. I guess this shows, more than anything else, that central to Obama’s identity and campaign is the fact that he is the son of two graduate students.
