Federal agents are investigating a bombing of a mailbox at the Fairfax County home of the Treasury Department's inspector general, Eric Thorson.

Authorities said residents on the 9500 block of Peniwill Drive heard an explosion during the early-morning hours of New Year's Eve. Police were called the next morning when the homeowner found the mailbox had been destroyed.

Police found evidence of an explosive device and contacted Fairfax County fire marshals officials. The matter is being investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Fairfax County Fire Marshal's Office.

Investigators are trying to determine whether the explosion is connected to Thorson's work.
