ATLANTA (AP) — Georgia rapper Gucci Mane was being held in jail on an assault charge after a fan told police the artist smashed a champagne bottle on his head in a downtown Atlanta nightclub.

Mane, whose real name is Radric Davis, was in custody early Wednesday on a charge of aggravated assault with a weapon, Fulton County Jail records show.

An arrest warrant was issued for Mane after James Lettley of Fort Hood, Texas, who is a member of the military, told police the rapper struck him in the V.I.P. area at Harlem Nights Club on March 16. Lettley said he was in Atlanta for his birthday and hoping to get a picture with the rapper when he was attacked in the club's V.I.P. area.

"Once he struck me in my head, I looked at him in a state of shock and looked at him like 'why?'" Lettley recalled.

An ambulance crew was tending to a large gash on Lettley's head when officers arrived, Atlanta police said. He was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he said he had to get 10 stitches.

It was unclear if Mane has an attorney. Fulton County authorities say he faces a first appearance at 11 a.m. Wednesday.
