The Atlantic’s David Wagner put together a list of the 50 worst columns of 2012. Mark Steyn and Victor Davis Hanson over at National Review responded to making the list, but there is one selection appears to have made the list because Wagner dislikes the author.

Here’s how Wagner responds to a recent column in which Santorum opposed ratification of a certain United Nations Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities:

Rick Santorum at World Net Daily on disabled people You know what poses a threat to U.S. sovereignty? Disabled people, according to Rick Santorum, who chose to focus on this of all issues following his failed bid for the presidency. By ratifying a sensible, widely adopted U.N. treaty on the rights of persons with disabilities, the freedoms of able-bodied Americans would be trampled on, he argues: “There is no reason for our country to give up our sovereignty to the United Nations when it comes to providing benefits and protections for the disabled in America.”

You don’t have to read Santorum’s column to know that Wagner must be missing something. Or someone. Santorum, after all, is the recent presidential candidate whose three-year-old daughter, Bella, has Trisomy 18, a rare genetic disorder that usually kills the children who have it long before they reach the age of three.

So, if Santorum doesn’t like a treaty on the rights of disabled people, it’s probably not because he thinks it’s “sensible” and thus at odds with his alleged goal of harming the disabled.

“Who chose to focus on this of all issues following his failed bid for the presidency” — it’s not really that surprising that Santorum is focusing on issues related to disabilities now that his campaign is over, given how often he discussed the topic during the campaign — and given how many times he cancelled campaign activities because his daughter had to go to the hospital (twice, if I recall correctly).

I happen to know this stuff about Rick Santorum and his daughter only because I had to cover the presidential election for my job. What was Wagner doing?
