Last week, while reviewing delicious white wines from the state of Washington, I pointed out that the state's wine industry has been on a proverbial tear for the last several years. But Washington is not new to the wine-making game. The state's wine history can be traced back to the early 19th...

For the last 50 years, the state of Washington has quietly but steadily been producing a bevy of tasty wines ranging from crisp, dry whites to spicy, bold reds and just about everything in between. As the old saying goes, "Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life." Well, on a recent business trip, the next best thing happened to me. I went to Portland, Ore., for work and fell in love -- again -- with the Willamette Valley. The Willamette Valley is...

    Scott Greenberg

    Published: Wed, May 1, 2013

Winemaker Robert Pepi -- Bob to his friends -- said something so remarkable that it was several seconds before I realized I was staring at his face. Pepi casually mentioned that he was starting his 51st harvest this year. What? That would make him north of 70 years old, and if that were true, I...

When you have the most famous family name in California winemaking and also own the oldest winery in Napa Valley, the word that comes to mind is "stewardship." Stewardship for the land, stewardship for the wine, and stewardship for the legacy. That is the fundamental philosophy at the core of...

  • Wine review: The Judgment of Annapolis

    Published: Wed, Apr 17, 2013

There are few seminal events in the history of the modern wine world that are as significant as the events that unfolded in Paris on May 24, 1976. It was nearly 200 years following the founding of the United States that another shot was fired that was heard around the world ... the wine world,...

Part two of a two-part series California's Central Coast is one of the largest and most desirable grape-growing regions in the world. Part one of a two-part series on California Central Coast wines. Several years ago, in an article in Food & Wine magazine, wine critic Robert M. Parker Jr. stated, "Look for wines from California's Central Coast ... to take their place alongside the hallowed bottlings of Napa and Sonoma...

Easter Sunday is a significant celebration that traditionally includes family, friends and, of course, food. And regardless of whether your Easter involves hunting for eggs, gathering for a big brunch, preparing a festive meal or all three, chances are wine will play an important role, providing...

  • Wine review: The Truth behind Worthy and Axios is Kalaris

    Scott Greenberg

    Published: Wed, Mar 20, 2013

Local wine distributor Constantine "Gus" Kalaris could very well be one of the nicest people in the wine business. He routinely prefers a bear hug to a handshake, and his broad smile and deep laugh are genuinely infectious. We met about a decade ago at the release party of the first vintage of...
