JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Authorities say four people in Mississippi have been injured in severe storms that raked much of the Southeast and were taken to hospitals.

An employee at a Mississippi hospital told The Associated Press early Thursday that the four people taken there were in stable condition and two of them were subsequently sent on to a hospital in the state capital of Jackson. The employee reached at Sharkey Issaquena Community Hospital in Rolling Fork declined further comment when asked about the extent of the injuries.

A front that barreled across several Southern states overnight toppled trees, downed power lines and damaged homes in parts of northern Mississippi, emergency officials say. The National Weather Service said it would be checking later Thursday on possible reports of tornadoes associated with the front.
