Authorities urge safety for Thanksgiving travel

JOLIET, Ill. (AP) — Illinois authorities are reminding drivers to take extra safety precautions during the busy holiday travel period.

Illinois State Police say to expect high volumes of traffic on interstates and roads through Sunday. They say be sure to avoid speeding, drinking and driving and to wear seatbelts and pay attention to the road.

Authorities say they'll be vigilant during the high traffic period.

Police say teenage drivers have been classified as the highest risk category for those to be involved in a fatality during the Thanksgiving holiday period. According to ISP, over the last three years, teenage and college-aged drivers and passengers have been involved in about half of fatal crashes that have occurred the day before and Thanksgiving Day.

Authorities recommend designating a sober driver and buckling up.
