A Prince William County woman has been charged with felony child neglect after a family took an injured baby to an area hospital, police said Monday.

Police responded to the Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center in Woodbridge on Thursday for a report of an unconscious baby. The 5-month-old girl had sustained internal injuries consistent with abuse, police said. Detectives said that earlier that morning, a relative of the baby was attempting to get her to go to sleep. The baby began to cry, and the relative squeezed the victim tightly several times and forcibly put the baby back into her bed. Later in the day, the victim became unresponsive while with other family members.

Monique Diane Coachman, 20, of Triangle, was charged with aggravated malicious wounding and felony child abuse. Police would not identify the relationship to the baby to protect the child's identity.

The baby remained in critical condition Monday afternoon, police said.
