In all fairness, I don't think anyone's ever accused Roland Emmerich of being a particularly good filmmaker. But considering his films have earned over $3 billion worldwide, there's a reason he still gets to make movies. Still, you could still argue that his early work which includes Universal Soldier, Stargate and Independence Day was much more insightful and well-constructed than Godzilla, The Day After Tomorrow, 2012 or White House Down. I suppose we should blame ourselves, to a degree. If ticket sales for end-of-the-world porn like The Day After Tomorrow and 2012 weren't so damn high, we may have gotten something else from Emmerich this year instead of a president-in-danger movie that wants oh-so-badly to be this generation's Die Hard.
