A Harford County Circuit Court judge said Joseph Steffen, a former Robert Ehrlich aide, will have to testify today before a state committee in Annapolis, denying an attempt to have the subpoena ruled invalid.

Steffen ? long known as the “Prince of Darkness” for reasons that seem to depend on who?s telling the story ? is a key witness for Democratic lawmakers who want to know if Ehrlich used Steffen to improperly fire Democrats working for the state. Steffen no longer works for Ehrlich, and he argued the legislative panel should have no power to subpoena witnesses.
