IOWA CITY — Bakir Hajdarevic didn't have to study for the most important test in a class last fall. He just had to spit — a lot. The 19-year-old freshman at the University of Iowa took an honors seminar on personal genetics in which students had the option of sending saliva samples so a testing company could use DNA to unlock some of their most personal health and family secrets. The class, taught at Iowa for the first time, is part of a growing movement in higher education to tackle the rapidly advancing field of personal genetics, which is revolutionizing medicine and raising difficult ethical and privacy questions. DES MOINES — Lawmakers in the state House and Senate are miles apart when it comes to their budget goals. Gov. Terry Branstad last month put out a $6.5 billion plan for the fiscal year that starts July 1. On Wednesday, leaders in the Republican-majority House called for spending less money and the Democratic-controlled Senate sought to spend more. By Catherine Lucey.

DROUGHT-RIVER SHIPPING

ST. LOUIS — Mississippi River shippers have returned to hauling full loads now that the drought-ravaged waterway has benefited from a wintery Midwest blitz and aggressive rock-clearing, snuffing fears of a barge shutdown, the river's stewards and barge operators say. The Army Corps of Engineers and the Coast Guard declared the averted crisis a victory but cautioned that the same threats to shipping on the vital commerce corridor could return next winter, with the nation's worst drought in decades showing no signs of easing. CRASH KILLS FAMILY

ORANGE CITY — A college student from Sioux Falls, S.D., who lost her entire family in a car crash was told about the accident during the intermission of a play at her Iowa school. Greg Christy, president of Northwestern College, broke the news to Brittany Vollmer, a sophomore at the Orange City school. "It was very painful to have to share such tragic news with one of our students. It's something that none of us would ever want to do," he said.
