Biden charms at Florida diner

Vice President Biden paid a visit to Mel's Diner in Fort Myers, Fla., on Saturday, where he charmed the small crowd. Biden sat down with one young woman to discuss her wedding plans; sent a pair of nurses into a tizzy by asking, "Would you like to take my pulse?" (they did); and posed for pictures in front of Elvis Presley memorabilia.

Manager Bill Malstrom told Yeas & Nays that he had only 10 minutes' notice that the vice president was stopping by, but he wasn't fazed. "We've had hundreds of famous people come in," he said. "Larry Byrd used to go to one of our other stores."

One person who never came in? "Newt Gingrich was supposed to stop by, blew me off," Malstrom said. But no hard feelings toward the GOP. "I'm not committed to either candidate at this point," he said, adding that he would welcome anyone to the diner. "We're here to feed people."
