Biden on gun control: ‘This is not about anybody’s Constitutional right to own a weapon’

During a gun violence news conference in New York City today with Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Vice President Joe Biden hammered home the point that none of the Obama administration’s gun control proposals infringe on the Second Amendment right to bear arms.

“There is not one single thing— not one, not one single thing— being proposed that infringes on anyone’s Second Amendment rights,” Biden said.

The majority of Americans favor the administration’s proposals, which include universal background checks and a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, Biden said. Both he and Bloomberg cited polls showing approval for background checks, but did not reference opinion for the other proposals.

Adam Lanza, the shooter who killed 26 people at Sandy Hood Elementary in December, walked into the school with “a weapon of war” that Biden said has no place on the street.

‘This is not about anybody’s Constitutional right to own a weapon,” he said.

The Vice President said he urges anyone who claims Congress can’t ban high-capacity magazines to think about Newtown and how many children and teachers might be alive if Lanza had been forced to reload more often before the police arrived.

“Tell me how it violates anyone’s Constitutional right to be limited to a clip that only holds 10 rounds instead of 30!” he declared. “This is a false choice being presented to the American people.”

Biden pledged that neither he or President Obama will rest until their proposals have been enacted. He insisted those proposals will take away “not one iota of any Constitutionally guaranteed right of any American.”
