Big-city Democrats like President Obama aren't credible on gun violence

Here's a headline from a story on blackamericaweb.com: “Black community needs Obama's voice on urban gun violence.”

As a member of a bona fide black community, I take exception. The last thing the “black community” needs is another liberal voice on urban gun violence. That goes for President Obama or any liberal's voice.

Obama hails from Chicago, where an alleged gang member recently fired into a crowd at a basketball game and wounded 13 people.

Now, we already know how Obama and other liberals will react to that shooting, don't we? They'll call for more gun control laws and even more restrictions on the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens.

And, knowing Obama, he’ll whip out the “let’s do it for the children” card.

As if on cue, the president did precisely that, according to a story that appeared on Fox News' website:

“Days after mass shootings in both his hometowns, President Obama urged his most ardent supporters Saturday ‘to get back up and go back at it’ and help push stalled legislation out of Congress so dangerous people won’t get their hands on guns.”

Here’s a direct quote from the president:

“We can’t rest until all our children can go to school or walk down the street free from the fear that they will be struck down by a stray bullet.”

See what I mean about the “let’s do it for the kiddies” card? Obama made his remarks at the annual awards dinner of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, so he was addressing another group of black liberal Democrats we don’t need to hear from about gun violence.

You wouldn’t think from reading Obama’s remarks that Chicago already has some of the most draconian anti-gun laws in the country, would you?

It does. And those laws haven’t decreased gun violence in that town one iota.

Before Rahm Emanuel was elected Chicago’s mayor, gun violence was down. That was before Emanuel and his police chief abandoned the police policy that kept gun violence down.

Last year, two Chicago aldermen said their constituents favored police returning to the aggressive, in-your-face, stop-and-frisk policies they’d used against gang members in the past.

Apparently, that policy worked. At the very least, it was more effective than the policy of disarming law-abiding citizens.

Obama knows, more than anyone, the strategy that will reduce gun violence in his hometown. Being a liberal Democrat, he just can’t say what those two aldermen said last year in the wake of some of the most horrific gun violence the Windy City had seen in years.

That’s why we can’t trust many liberal Democrats who hail from large cities when they talk about things like gun violence, and how to address it.

What kind of credibility do such liberal Democrats bring to the discussion?

For years, they've ruled the roost in places like Chicago; Baltimore; Washington, D.C.; Newark, N.J.; Oakland, Calif.; Philadelphia and Detroit.

Under the stewardship of liberal Democrats, Detroit has not only become one of the most violent American cities, but also is now an economic basket case as well. The other cities mentioned have also seen their share of gun violence.

Were Republicans running those cities, you can bet Democrats would lay the blame for gun violence squarely at the feet of all those in the party.

Republicans would be chided for the failure of their policies in reducing gun violence. Any comment they would make about gun violence would be dismissed out of hand.

Let’s treat liberal Democrats the way conservative Republicans would be treated in these circumstances. That would be by giving them the back of our hand when they make any comments about how to end gun violence.
