The number of bicycle crashes in Fairfax County increased by 26 percent last year, new county data shows.
There were 106 reported crashes in 2012, up from 84 the year before.
County officials are still working to determine the leading cause of the accidents. In 2011 they determined that both cyclists and motorists failed to yield the right of way. In those instances, bicyclists were found to be at fault for the majority of the accidents, data shows.
Members of the Fairfax Advocates for Better Bicycling organization vowed to "discuss with county leaders how this data can be used to help prioritize future bike facility improvements."
