WILMINGTON, N.Y. (AP) — The 13th Annual Whiteface Mountain Uphill Bike Race is still on despite construction on the Veterans' Memorial Highway.
Race officials say the course is unaffected for next Saturday's 11-mile race.
The certified course has an 8 percent grade up the 4,865-foot high peak, New York's fifth-highest mountain. The race begins at Whiteface Mountain Ski Center and ends at the castle at the top of the highway.
The race is part of BUMPS — short for Bike Up The Mountain Point Series. The series comprises 10 races on nine mountains in the Northeast.
The Whiteface Visitors Bureau organizes the event as part of Wilmington Whiteface Bike Fest weekend. This year, there's a $500 prize for the overall combined winner of the hill climb and the Wilmington Whiteface 100K on Sunday.
