Metro board, public skip budget hearing

Only two people testified Monday at a public hearing about how Metro should invest in its rail and bus systems, outnumbered by media outlets covering the meeting.

No Metro board members attended the afternoon hearing.

The issue was Metro’s plan to spend $851 million in the next budget on capital improvements, including $18 million on escalators and $92 million to replace three bus garages.

“I’m a little disappointed that the board of directors aren’t here today,” testified Jarrett Bolden, who said he left work early to speak out. “I’m disappointed the plan doesn’t have an increase in capacity… A huge amount of money is going to very little improvement to the overall system.”

People still have a chance to weigh in on the plan via written testimony submitted by March 28.
