New overpass may ease congestion near GMU

It may not be enough to soothe the pain of George Mason’s remarkable routing by Ohio State in the NCAA basketball tournament, but the mighty Patriots may soon have something else to cheer about: Less traffic congestion.

A long-hoped-for plan to build an overpass between the main east and west campuses is coming baby steps closer to fruition. The new road would bridge Rt. 123/Ox Road between the campuses, alleviating some of the nightmarish traffic at the Braddock Road and Rt. 123 intersection.

Fairfax Supervisor John Cook, R-Braddock, will host a meeting to further discuss and plan the overpass on March 28. University and political representatives will be in attendance, including state Del. David Bulova, D-Fairfax.

A Cook spokesman said that much work is underway to secure the funding, which would likely be a combination of state and local dollars.
