Metro 5000 series rail cars check out after meltdown

Sixteen Metro rail cars that had been pulled out of service for a possible brake system problem last week will soon be riding the rails again, the transit agency said Tuesday.

The transit agency had pulled the 16 rail cars last Wednesday after a piece fell from the brake system of a similar 5000 series car, damaging two other trains and tying up the Blue and Orange lines for hours. The agency pulled cars that have equipment from the same manufacturing batch, but some 170 others 5000 series cars stayed in operation.

“We have completed visual inspections of all 5000-series railcars with no failures or defects found,” Metro spokesman Dan Stessel said in an e-mail. “The investigation into the root cause remains ongoing.”
