Redskins notes: Five quick hits

1.   Santana Moss will play Sunday barring a setback. This is a bit surprising when you consider a week ago coach Mike Shanahan doubted he would return until the Jets game the following week. But Moss hasn’t had any issues and said his left hand doesn’t bother him when he catches.

“I feel like my hand is ready,” Moss said. “When it comes to taking hits on it, that’s something that you can’t prevent. The catching part should be normal, but taking a hit is going to be something different.”

2.      LaRon Landry practiced in full after missing last week with a sore Achilles. Landry said the Achilles remains sore, but that it’s a lot better than it was last season. It’s just sore. He also said he doesn’t anticipate needing surgery in the offseason. At one point this summer he said that might be needed if it got worse.

Yes, he believes he could have played last week.

“Man, if I don’t practice no days I can be effective on Sunday,” Landry said. “I don’t forget how to play football. It all depends on the coaching staff.”

3.       The Redskins know what they have in Sav Rocca, now fourth in the NFL in net punting (41.3 yards).

“He’s as good as I’ve ever been around,” Shanahan said. “He’s much better than I expected.”

Special teams coach Danny Smith said, “His bad punts are what we used to consider good punts here.”

 4.       Cornerback Josh Wilson is excited to play his former team – if his hamstring allows him to, that is — but he’s more excited with how comfortable he’s feeling in this defense. The pass he nearly intercepted at the goal line was an example of how he can play now. When receiver Dez Bryant lined up extra wide, Wilson knew what to anticipate and nearly intercepted the slant pass. He wasn’t thinking that way before.

“You can react to the offense instead of just thinking about what you have to do on defense,” he said.

Wilson’s play has clearly improved of late. He got beat on the one touchdown and he did get called for holding. But his coverage has been tighter in general.

5.       The rest of the injury report: Linebacker London Fletcher (ankle) and receiver Niles Paul (toe) did not practice. Six players were limited: right tackle Jammal Brown (groin), safety DeJon Gomes (knee), guard Maurice Hurt (knee), tackle Sean Locklear (ankle), tackle Trent Williams (knee) and Wilson (hamstring).
