Fox Newsers survive dark and spooky Halloween shows

Those who work at Fox News Channel’s D.C. bureau proved Monday that they’re not afraid of the dark, even on Halloween.

In an odd twist of timing, the Washington office of the cable news channel had sporadic power all day and into the night Monday, forcing Greta Van Susteren to send staff out to buy candles and flashlights, and Bret Baier to broadcast from a dark and creepy set.

“It occurred to me that maybe we were working in some sort of Halloween spook house,” Van Susteren told Yeas & Nays Tuesday. “We worked under much more rugged conditions when we covered Hurricane Katrina, so this wasn’t bad at all,” she added. The “On The Record” host was forced to wear a coat because the heat was also out, but made light of the situation by giving a flashlight-guided tour of the studio and green room and then posted the videos onto her blog.

Baier opened his show by giving viewers a heads up. “Before we start, a little explainer here — the reason the desk is this way and we kind of reconfigured things today, the electric company apparently cut a line and our building essentially has very little power,” Baier said during Monday’s “Special Report,” before proceeding as usual.

Baier still hosted a panel of guests, though when he tried cuing a video clip…no dice. Baier explained to Yeas & Nays that his show had to be shot in an entirely different studio. “We couldn’t use the studio we usually do because some of the bigger monitors didn’t have enough power,” Baier said. “Thankfully we have a fantastic technical staff here at the D.C. bureau.”

On Tuesday things were back to normal. “Although the spooky darkness made for an interesting Halloween show,” Baier said.
