Boys already outnumber girls in Nigerian schools, but the terrorist organization Boko Haram is making it worse.
Boko Haram loosely translates to “Western education is forbidden,” and the group sees the education of girls as part of the westernization it despises. This is why the group has been targeting Nigerian schoolgirls — and they’re succeeding.
Most secondary schools in the Northeast region of Nigeria -- where Boko Haram has concentrated its attacks -- have closed, according to the Economist.
Literacy among women and girls in northern Nigeria is appalling. Between 0 percent and 20 percent of women in the northwest region are literate, while women in the Boko Haram's northeast region fair a little better, with 41 percent to 60 percent being literate, according to this map from Vox.com.
But with the recent escalation in attacks on schoolgirls, Boko Haram may end up bringing that literacy rate down.
