A 16-year-old boy was sentenced to 60 years in prison for murdering his 92-year-old neighbor in Prince George's County, officials said.
William Fitts, of District Heights, was sentenced Friday. He pleaded guilty in April to second-degree murder, first-degree burglary and felony theft, according to the Prince George's County State's Attorney's Office.
On Aug. 15, 2011, police went to the District Heights home of Thelma Steele because she had not been heard from for several days. She was found with stab wounds, dead on her couch.
Police quickly developed Fitts as a suspect. He lived across the street from Steele and had used her credit card to purchase "organic" marijuana online, officials said.
Fitts admitted that he stabbed Steele after they argued about family issues. After her slaying, he returned to her home and took her purse, cash and credit card.
