A 3-year-old boy has died after falling from a third-story window in Loudoun County, officials said.

Early Sunday afternoon, the boy fell from the window at his home on Raspberry Drive in Leesburg. The window was open and he fell through the screen, said Liz Mills, a spokeswoman with the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office.

The boy, whose name was not released, was airlifted to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. He died Monday afternoon.

Mills said that the incident appears to have been a "tragic accident." She said that parents should consider installing window guards or window stops or should open windows from the top.
