SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) — Barbara Coe, who co-sponsored California's Proposition 187 measure on illegal immigration, has died. She was 79.

Friends tell the Orange County Register that Coe died of lung cancer on Saturday.

Coe founded the California Coalition for Immigration Reform, based in Huntington Beach.

In 1994, she co-sponsored 187. It barred people who were in the country illegally from receiving public health care, education and other services.

The ballot measure won voter approval but was overturned in the courts.

More recently, Coe called for a boycott of Mexico. She believed that President Obama was born in another country and told the Register in 2011 that he was part of what she called a "New World Order plan to destroy America."
