The Supreme Court of Canada agreed on Thursday to hear Chevron's appeal of a lower-court decision that Ecuadorean villagers can pursue a $9.51 billion lawsuit for Amazon jungle pollution. It was the latest twist in a two-decade-old conflict between Chevron and residents of Ecuador's Lago Agrio region in the Amazon jungle. They are asking the Ontario court to force Chevron to pay the 2011 judgment against them for $8 billion from an Ecuadorean court. The California-based company no longer has any assets in Ecuador.
