BOSTON (AP) — The Marine Biological Laboratory on Cape Cod and the University of Chicago have agreed to a research and educational affiliation.

The two institutions have historical ties, as the laboratory was led by University of Chicago faculty for the first four decades following its 1888 founding.

The affiliation was announced Wednesday and is expected to take effect July 1.

University of Chicago President Robert Zimmer said such collaborations are becoming increasingly essential because solving problems requires varied perspectives and specialties.

The independent lab, located in Falmouth, says it's faced financial pressure in recent years. Lab President and Director Joan Ruderman said the new affiliation will preserve what's special about the institution, while expanding its programs.

The institutions say they plan to collaborate in various areas, including neuroscience and molecular engineering.
