Capitals left wing Wojtek Wolski is in the midst of a six-game scoring drought with no goals and no assists during that stretch. A top-six forward for most of this season, he remains on the No. 1 line with Nicklas Backstrom and Troy Brouwer and is thankful that opportunity has continued. But he also needs to produce and – for now at least – that isn’t happening.
“It’s tough. You never know why. It’s something that you want to work through,” said Wolski, who signed a one-year, $600,000 contract with Washington over the summer. “You don’t want to veer too far from the game plan. I think when you don’t score you want to start changing things because you’re not scoring, but I think the best thing to do is to work through it, put in the effort and the results will come.”
Caps coach Adam Oates noted that Wolski had three quality chances on goal in the second period of Sunday’s loss to the New York Rangers. That’s good. But he didn’t convert any of them and finished the game with one shot on net. That’s bad. And they both hope it changes against the Devils tonight at Verizon Center.
“That might win us the game if one of them goes in. [Wolski is] doing some good things,” Oates said. “He’s playing with good players. He’s had some chances. And, yeah, we obviously want him to score and everybody goes through droughts. But you got to be doing something right to get the chances.”
