The Capitals will make a lineup switch tonight against the Montreal Canadiens when Wotjek Wolski moves to the top line with Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom.
Wolski scored a goal in the season-opener against Tampa Bay and spent some time on the top line Tuesday against Winnipeg in place of the ineffective Marcus Johansson. He will play left wing, as usual, however – keeping Ovechkin on the right wing once again.
“I’ve done it before. I think most guys have, you know?” Wolski said. “Sometimes the opportunity presents itself to move up, or to have an opportunity to play with guys like that. You’ve just got to play where you can. I’m lucky that I am playing on the left side, not the right side.”
Meanwhile, Matt Hendricks gets rewarded for his fine play on Tuesday with a promotion to the second line at left wing. He will play with center Mike Ribeiro and right wing Troy Brouwer. Johansson drops to fourth line left wing.
“He’s an honest coach,” Hendricks said of Adam Oates. “He said that from Day One that hard work’s going to pay off around here. Do the systems correctly, work hard at what you do and you’ll be rewarded. Maybe this is an example of it.”
Michal Neuvirth gets his first start in goal after Braden Holtby played in the first two games. He is 4-1-0 in his career against the Canadiens with a .939 save percentage and a 1.82 goals-against average. Eric Fehr, Jeff Schultz and John Erskine are again the scratches.
