PORTSMOUTH, Va. (AP) — Portsmouth authorities suspect carbon monoxide poisoning in the deaths of a couple whose bodies were found in their apartment.

Police spokesman Jan Westerbeck tells media outlets that a relative found the bodies of 65-year-old Leroy Stith and his wife, 65-year-old Inez Stith, at about 9 a.m. Thursday.

Firefighters detected carbon monoxide in the apartment and evacuated the building in the Swanson Homes public housing complex. Other residents of the building were checked and no medical problems were found.

The complex is owned by the Portsmouth Redevelopment and Housing Authority. Deputy executive director Kathy Warren says each unit has smoke detectors that also detect carbon monoxide. The detectors are checked regularly.

The bodies were sent to the medical examiner's office to determine the cause of death.
