Carousels: Not just for fun anymore

On Monday, the National Zoo announced a new carousel was open on the premises, but this isn't your mom's merry-go-round -- it's a giant, moving, teachable moment. First of all, it's powered by 162 solar panels, making it one of the world's only solar-powered carousels. In addition, of the 58 hand-carved animals, many represent endangered species. Riders can choose to sit atop a cuttlefish, a meerkat or relax in the two-seated coral chariot.
