James Carville, a top strategist for former President Clinton, warned today that President Obama’s campaign faces a risk in touting his first-term record.

“Talk about in your second term what you’re going to do,” Carville said of Obama’s campaign messaging during an MSNBC interview. “The more that he focuses on the first term, the worse he’s going to do; the more he focuses on the second term, the better he’s going to do.”

Carville’s comment came after Stan Greenberg — a Clinton pollster and co-author with Carville of their book It’s the Middle Class, Stupid — said that Obama should “double down” on Obamacare. “[R]eally show how you can bring down costs [because] that’s when it’s going to become an economic message,” Greenberg said.
