NEWFANE, Vt. (AP) — Vermont Telephone Co. says it will ask the state Public Service Board within weeks for permission to build a 150-foot communications tower in picturesque Newfane village.

But seeking permission directly from the state has some in town upset. They say the local ordinance on telecommunications facilities is being ignored.

The Brattleboro Reformer (http://bit.ly/V1tvNP ) says it's the second time a similar issue has arisen in Newfane in recent months. An AT&T plan to put a 130-foot tower in South Newfane has been the topic of several heated local meetings.

Vermont Telephone President Michel Guite ("mi-SHELL gee-TAY") maintains his project has a great design and will bring high-speed internet service to 176 homes currently lacking it.
