Cellphone stolen? Now you can shut it down

People whose cellphones have been lost or stolen can now shut down their devices before they can be resold, District officials announced Monday.

The initiative is partially a result of D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier's campaign against wireless companies who had previously refused to use technology that would discourage thieves from targeting smartphones. The major carriers changed their position in April after Lanier publicly blasted them for putting profits over customer safety.

District officials also unveiled a website, brickit.dc.gov, with links to phone numbers of wireless companies to have the phones shut down.
