A family's home was invaded in Charles County early Wednesday morning, and the perpetrators fled into Prince George's County, officials said.

The incident occurred at about 4:45 a.m. Wednesday at a house in the 7400 block of Leonardtown Road in Hughesville. According to a preliminary investigation, a man and his girlfriend were in the home with their 5-year-old boy when three people kicked in a door and demanded money at gunpoint, Charles County Sheriff's Office officials said.

The man was assaulted but did not require any medical treatment. His girlfriend and child were not injured. The invaders fled in a white Chevrolet Tahoe, and it is unclear if they took anything, officials said.

The victims gave police a description of the invaders' vehicle, and an officers spotted it and tried to stop it. The SUV's driver initially pulled over but then fled after officers approached, officials said. Officers then pursued the vehicle but lost sight of it near Mount Rainier in Prince George's County.

Officers believe that the victim's house was targeted. Anyone with information can call Crime Solvers at 866-411-TIPS (8477).
