The D.C. Council is almost out for the summer, and Ward 3 Councilwoman Mary Cheh has big plans for the recess: a language immersion program in Mexico.
"I'm going to live with a Mexican family, and I'm going to take four lessons a day," said Cheh, who added that she has wanted to participate in such an experience for years.
The two-week program will amount to a reversal of roles for Cheh, who is also a George Washington University law professor, since she'll be the one doing homework instead of assigning papers and scoring exams.
"I'm a little concerned, at my age, about all of this studying," Cheh said.
The lawmaker said her daughter, who is interning in Mexico City, had offered to assist with her assignments.
"She said, get this, 'Don't worry, Mom: I'll do your homework for you,' Cheh recounted to a reporter. "I said, 'That's not the point!'"
The council -- perhaps with a newly minted Spanish speaker -- will return from its two-month break in mid-September.
