D.C.'s famous cherry blossoms will have a shorter peak bloom period than predicted.

Peak bloom is now expected to take place March 29 to April 1, and the complete blooming period will occur from March 26 to April 7, the National Park Service announced Wednesday. Peak bloom had been predicted to be from March 29 to April 3.

The Park Service amended the peak bloom dates Wednesday after declaring that the trees were in their "puffy white" stage on Tuesday. This stage usually occurs four to six days before peak bloom, the period when 70 percent of the blossoms are open. - Erica Redmond
