VOICE-OVER SCRIPT:

IT'S A SCENE TOO COMMON IN GAZA RIGHT NOW... YOUNG CHILDREN - MANY IN CRITICAL CONDITION - CARRIED INTO HOSPITALS LIKE THESE,

FIGHTING FOR SURVIVAL.

A WEEK AFTER ISRAEL BEGAN IT'S OFFENSIVE AGAINST MILITANTS IN THE HAMAS-CONTROLLED GAZA, MORE THAN 170 PALESTINIANS HAVE BEEN

KILLED... HUNDREDS MORE INJURED.

SOUNDBITE: (Arabic) Dr. Ayman Al-Sahabany, Director of Emergency ward at Al-Shifa Hospital

"Women and children are more than half of the casualties. And children form a third of the total casualties."

FOR SOME, LIKE 4-YEAR-OLD SHAYMA AL-MASRI, THEIR INJURIES ARE THE LEAST OF THEIR PROBLEMS.

NOW IN STABLE CONDITION AT THE AL-SHIFA HOSPITAL, SHAYMA LOST HER MOTHER, HER 17-YEAR-OLD BROTHER AND HER 14-YEAR-OLD SISTER

LAST WEEK WHEN TWO ISRAELI MISSILES STRUCK AS THE FAMILY WALKED IN THEIR NEIGHBORHOOD.

HER AUNT WORRIES ABOUT HOW SHE WILL PROTECT SHAYMA IF THE STRIKES CONTINUE.

SOUNDBITE: (Arabic) Samah Al-Masri, Shayma's Aunt

"Where do I hide her? When the child comes to hide in my arms and I find the entire house falling on top of us what do I do then?"

TO ISRAELI MOTHERS, SAMAH AL-MASRI HAS THIS MESSAGE...

SOUNDBITE: (Arabic) Samah Al-Masri, Shayma's Aunt

"Just like you fear for yourselves, we fear for ourselves too. Just like you fear for your children, we fear for our children too."

ISRAEL HAS CARRIED OUT MORE THAN 13-HUNDRED AIR STRIKES OVER THE PAST WEEK IN AN ATTEMPT TO DIMINISH HAMAS' ABILITY TO FIRE

ROCKETS.

OVER THE WEEKEND, IT WIDENED ITS RANGE OF TARGETS TO CIVILIAN INSTITUTIONS WITH SUSPECTED HAMAS TIES.

IN RETURN, HAMAS HAS FIRED NEARLY 1000 ROCKETS AND MORTARS AT ISRAEL AND SAYS IT WON'T BE THE FIRST TO CEASE FIRE.

THE OFFENSIVE MARKS THE HEAVIEST FIGHTING SINCE A SIMILAR EIGHT-DAY CAMPAIGN IN NOVEMBER 2012 TO STOP GAZA ROCKET FIRE.
